If you’re trying to conceive, the two-week wait can make you notice absolutely everything.
A tiny cramp.
A sore breast.
A wave of nausea.
A spot of blood.
A sudden need for an afternoon nap.
And then comes the inevitable question:
Is this an early sign of pregnancy or am I just imagining it?
The frustrating answer is that early pregnancy symptoms can be very subtle, and many of them overlap almost perfectly with the symptoms of an approaching period.
Some people feel different almost immediately.
Some feel absolutely nothing.
And neither experience tells you with certainty whether implantation has occurred.
At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood, Brisbane, fertility and pregnancy support is designed to sit alongside conventional medical care while also giving you space to navigate the emotional, physical and spiritual intensity of this stage. Spring offers fertility and pregnancy acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, pregnancy massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. (Spring Acupuncture)
What actually is implantation?
Implantation happens after an egg has been fertilised and the developing embryo travels to the uterus and attaches to the uterine lining.
Research into human implantation suggests it usually occurs within a relatively narrow window several days after ovulation, although exact timing varies between pregnancies. Classic prospective research by Wilcox and colleagues helped establish that implantation timing is an important part of very early pregnancy biology. (PubMed Central (PMC))
Importantly, you generally cannot feel implantation happening with certainty.
There is no single cramp, temperature, bleed or sensation that proves an embryo has implanted.
That distinction matters because the two-week wait can make every ordinary bodily sensation feel enormously significant.
What are the earliest signs of pregnancy?
Early pregnancy can present differently for everyone, but commonly reported signs include:
- a missed period
- breast tenderness
- tiredness or unusual fatigue
- nausea or vomiting
- increased urination
- constipation
- increased vaginal discharge
- light spotting around the time a period is expected.
The NHS notes that many recognisable pregnancy symptoms do not begin until around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, and some people experience very few symptoms at all. (nhs.uk)
This means feeling completely normal during the two-week wait does not tell you that conception hasn’t happened.
And feeling every possible symptom does not confirm that it has.
Is implantation bleeding real?
Light spotting can occur in very early pregnancy.
Pregnancy, Birth and Baby describes implantation bleeding as light spotting or bleeding that can occur in early pregnancy as the pregnancy implants into the lining of the uterus. It generally lasts only a few days. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
However, bleeding is not a reliable pregnancy test.
Many people do not experience implantation bleeding at all.
And spotting can have many other explanations, including hormonal changes, cervical irritation or the beginning of a period.
If you already know you are pregnant and experience vaginal bleeding, Australian guidance recommends contacting your doctor or midwife for advice. Very heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or shoulder pain, dizziness, fainting or feeling very unwell require urgent medical attention. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
What do implantation cramps feel like?
People sometimes describe mild pulling, twinging or cramping around the time implantation could theoretically occur.
But there is no clinically reliable “implantation cramp.”
Progesterone is already rising after ovulation whether conception has happened or not, and this hormonal phase can cause bloating, breast tenderness, pelvic sensations, tiredness and mood changes.
That is one reason the luteal phase can feel so confusing.
PMS and very early pregnancy can feel almost identical.
The most reliable way to know whether pregnancy has occurred is ultimately a pregnancy test.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, which begins to rise after implantation.
Testing too early can produce a negative result even if pregnancy has occurred because hCG may not yet be high enough to detect.
For the most reliable home result, testing around the time your period is due or afterwards is generally more useful than testing very early.
If you are undergoing IVF or taking fertility medications containing hCG, follow your clinic’s testing instructions rather than relying on an early home test, because medication may affect the result.
The emotional intensity of the two-week wait
This is where the medical explanation ends and the very human experience begins.
Because the two-week wait can be extraordinary.
One minute you’re telling yourself you’ll stay relaxed.
The next you’re searching:
“Is sneezing an implantation symptom?”
You can move between enormous hope and self-protection several times before breakfast.
Spring’s fertility approach recognises that this stage can affect much more than your reproductive system. Fertility treatment and waiting can touch identity, relationships, grief, hope, nervous-system regulation and a person’s sense of trust in their body. (Spring Acupuncture)
You deserve support even before you know the outcome.
Fertility and early pregnancy acupuncture in Brisbane
Spring offers fertility, IVF and pregnancy acupuncture in Springwood. (Spring Acupuncture)
The evidence around acupuncture improving implantation or live-birth rates is mixed, so acupuncture should not be presented as a way to “make implantation happen.”
Instead, it is best understood as complementary care.
For many people, acupuncture during the fertility journey provides a structured opportunity to rest, slow down and feel supported while continuing care with their GP, obstetric provider or fertility specialist.
If pregnancy is confirmed, acupuncture protocols should be adapted appropriately for pregnancy and delivered by a suitably qualified practitioner.
Naturopathy during preconception and early pregnancy
Spring also offers fertility, pregnancy and postpartum naturopathy. (Spring Acupuncture)
This may include reviewing nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, supplement use and general preconception health.
Early pregnancy is not the time to assume that every “natural” product is safe.
Herbs, high-dose supplements and essential oils can all have specific pregnancy considerations.
A qualified practitioner can help review what you’re currently taking and, importantly, work alongside your GP or maternity-care team.
Chinese herbal medicine during fertility treatment
Chinese herbal medicine may also be part of care at Spring when appropriate.
But this is an area where timing matters enormously.
Herbs that may be considered during preconception may not necessarily be appropriate after ovulation, during IVF treatment or once pregnancy is confirmed.
Spring itself advises that Chinese herbal medicine should be individually assessed and coordinated with fertility treatment where relevant. (Spring Acupuncture)
Always tell your fertility specialist or doctor about any herbal medicines and supplements you use.
Womb massage, fertility massage and pregnancy massage
Spring offers Womb Hara and fertility massage, as well as pregnancy-related massage care. (Spring Acupuncture)
Womb massage has not been proven to cause implantation or improve pregnancy rates.
And crucially, abdominal or fertility massage may not be appropriate after embryo transfer or once pregnancy may have occurred, depending on the technique and individual circumstances. Spring specifically notes that timing matters and that womb massage may be unsuitable after transfer or during pregnancy unless appropriately adapted. (Spring Acupuncture)
Once pregnancy is established, appropriately delivered pregnancy massage may instead be used for comfort and relaxation where suitable. (Spring Acupuncture)
Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy
Then there is the part of the two-week wait that no laboratory test can tend to.
The waiting.
The bargaining.
The fear of becoming too hopeful.
The feeling that your entire future might somehow be hiding inside one tiny biological process you cannot see.
Spring offers Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy for people who want emotional or spiritual support alongside their physical care. (Spring Acupuncture)
These modalities cannot determine whether implantation has occurred, predict pregnancy or replace medical assessment.
Their role is different.
Reiki may provide a quiet ritual of rest.
Tarot can offer reflective space for exploring fear, hope, identity and change but it cannot reliably tell you whether you are pregnant.
Spring describes Cellular Resonance Therapy as an energetic wellbeing modality focused on emotional patterns, embodiment and personal wholeness. (Spring Acupuncture)
Sometimes the most supportive thing during the two-week wait is not another symptom search.
It is somewhere safe to put all the feelings.
What happens if you get a positive test?
If that second line appears, your next step is usually to arrange appropriate pregnancy care with your GP, fertility clinic, midwife or obstetric provider.
If you conceived through IVF, follow your fertility clinic’s instructions around medication, blood tests and early ultrasound.
Spring can then shift with you from fertility support into pregnancy acupuncture, naturopathy and appropriately adapted massage and wellbeing care. (Spring Acupuncture)
And if you experience bleeding, severe pain or concerning symptoms, complementary care should never delay medical assessment. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
Early Pregnancy and Fertility Support in Springwood, Brisbane
So what are the early signs of pregnancy or implantation?
Possibly light spotting.
Breast tenderness.
Fatigue.
Nausea.
More frequent urination.
A missed period.
Or perhaps nothing at all.
Symptoms can offer clues, but they cannot confirm implantation.
Sometimes the most difficult part of early pregnancy is accepting that for several days, you simply cannot know.
At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood on Brisbane’s southside, fertility and pregnancy care brings together acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, pregnancy massage and optional emotional and spiritual modalities including Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. (Spring Acupuncture)
Because this stage is biological.
But it is also hopeful, vulnerable, strange and sacred.
And whichever way the result goes, you deserve to feel supported while you wait.
FAQ: Early Pregnancy and Implantation
What are the very earliest signs of pregnancy?
Possible early signs include a missed period, breast tenderness, fatigue, nausea, increased urination, constipation, increased discharge and sometimes light spotting. Many people do not notice symptoms until around 4–6 weeks of pregnancy. (nhs.uk)
What does implantation bleeding look like?
Implantation bleeding is generally described as light spotting or light bleeding in very early pregnancy, usually lasting only a few days. Not everyone experiences it, and bleeding can have many other causes. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
Can I feel implantation happening?
There is no reliable symptom that proves implantation is occurring. Some people report mild cramps or twinges, but similar sensations commonly occur before a period as well.
When does implantation happen?
Implantation generally occurs several days after ovulation, after a fertilised egg has travelled to the uterus. Research shows timing can vary between pregnancies. (PubMed Central (PMC))
Can I be pregnant without symptoms?
Yes. Early pregnancy symptoms vary significantly, and some people have few or no noticeable symptoms initially. (nhs.uk)
When should I worry about bleeding in early pregnancy?
Contact your doctor or midwife for any bleeding during pregnancy. Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or shoulder pain, fainting, dizziness or feeling very unwell. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
Can acupuncture help implantation?
Current evidence does not establish acupuncture as a reliable way to cause or guarantee implantation. It is best used as complementary support alongside appropriate fertility or pregnancy medical care.
What early pregnancy services does Spring Acupuncture Brisbane offer?
Spring lists pregnancy acupuncture, fertility and pregnancy naturopathy, pregnancy-related massage, acupuncture, Chinese medicine and complementary wellbeing modalities including Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. (Spring Acupuncture)
