There is a particular kind of grief that can come with trying to conceive.
You can be grieving someone you haven’t met yet.
A pregnancy that hasn’t happened.
A baby you have already imagined holding.
The age gap you pictured between your children.
The timeline you thought your life would follow.
The ease you assumed you would have.
The version of yourself who once believed that when she decided she was ready to become a mother, motherhood would simply arrive.
And because there may be no funeral, no flowers, no official moment where the world stops and acknowledges what you’ve lost, fertility grief can become an incredibly lonely kind of grief.
At Spring Acupuncture in Springwood on Brisbane’s southside, we see women and couples moving through the emotional landscape of natural conception, infertility, IVF, pregnancy loss and fertility treatment.
And sometimes what you need isn’t another person telling you to stay positive.
Sometimes you need somebody to acknowledge:
This is hard.
This matters.
And what you’re feeling is real.
What Is Fertility Grief?
Fertility grief can describe the sadness, loss and mourning associated with infertility, unsuccessful fertility treatment, pregnancy loss or the continued absence of the family you hoped to create.
Researchers have described infertility through concepts including disenfranchised grief, where a person’s grief is not fully recognised, validated or supported by the people around them. A qualitative study of women experiencing infertility found that invalidation from others could further complicate their experience of grief. (Sage Journals)
More recent research has also described infertility as triggering a mourning process that can affect identity and self-esteem. (PubMed)
Perhaps that’s because you aren’t only grieving a pregnancy.
You might be grieving:
- the baby you imagined
- failed or cancelled treatment cycles
- embryos that didn’t develop or implant
- pregnancies that ended
- the timeline you expected
- spontaneity around sex and conception
- financial security
- trust in your body
- friendships that changed
- the person you were before fertility became complicated
- the certainty you once felt about your future
And then somebody cheerfully says:
“It’ll happen when you stop trying.”
Which is generally not the fucking spiritual wisdom they think it is.
Infertility Can Carry a Significant Emotional Burden
The psychological impact of infertility isn’t imaginary or insignificant.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis encompassing 44 studies and 53,300 women experiencing infertility reported substantial levels of stress, anxiety and depression. (PubMed)
A newer systematic review examining psychological interventions for women experiencing infertility included 69 studies and 5,935 women. It found targeted psychological interventions produced significant improvements in anxiety, depression and wellbeing, with CBT and counselling among the approaches showing benefit. (PubMed Central (PMC))
This is important because complementary fertility care shouldn’t replace psychological care when you need it.
Sometimes healing means acupuncture.
Sometimes it means talking to a psychologist.
Sometimes it’s both.
You Don’t Have to Grieve Fertility Beautifully
There is no spiritually superior way to do this.
You can love your pregnant friend and avoid her baby shower.
You can feel grateful for your life and desperately sad about what’s missing from it.
You can feel hopeful one cycle and completely fucking over it the next.
You can practise gratitude and still think:
Why isn’t this happening for me?
You can believe deeply in your body and occasionally feel betrayed by it.
Contradictory emotions don’t mean you’re doing healing incorrectly.
They mean you’re human.
And perhaps healing isn’t about forcing yourself back into positivity.
Perhaps it begins with allowing yourself to acknowledge what this has cost you.
Fertility Acupuncture Brisbane: Somewhere to Be Held
For some Spring patients, fertility acupuncture becomes one of the few places where they don’t have to explain, optimise or perform.
You can simply arrive.
Research into acupuncture during IVF has examined emotional outcomes as well as physical treatment outcomes. A systematic review and meta-analysis involving eight trials and 2,253 participants found a small reduction in IVF-related state anxiety with acupuncture, although the certainty of the evidence was rated very low. (PubMed)
So acupuncture shouldn’t be presented as a treatment for grief or as something guaranteed to improve fertility outcomes.
Its role can be complementary.
A pause.
A ritual of care.
A place where someone knows what cycle day you’re on without that being the only interesting thing about you.
Naturopathy: Support Without Another Impossible Checklist
Grief can make us search for control.
Maybe if I take this supplement.
Eat this food.
Stop drinking that.
Exercise differently.
Optimise everything.
Sometimes this creates another layer of pressure.
Spring’s naturopathic fertility support can help women consider nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle and broader health in an individualised way rather than attempting to construct their fertility plan from Google, Instagram and conflicting advice.
The aim isn’t perfection.
It’s appropriate support.
And importantly, naturopathy doesn’t replace fertility investigation or medical care where these are needed.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Spring also offers Chinese herbal medicine as part of its fertility and women’s health care.
Where clinically appropriate, herbs may form part of an individual treatment plan. If you’re undergoing IVF or taking medications, however, your fertility specialist and Chinese medicine practitioner should know exactly what you’re using.
You don’t need to quietly add seventeen remedies because someone online became pregnant after taking them.
More treatment isn’t always better treatment.
Sometimes healing looks like having a coordinated team rather than carrying responsibility for every decision yourself.
Womb Massage: Reconnecting With a Body You May Be Grieving Too
Fertility grief isn’t always located only in your thoughts.
Sometimes the relationship with your body itself changes.
A body you once trusted can begin to feel like something you’re monitoring, questioning or blaming.
Spring’s Womb Hara and fertility massage offers nurturing, body-centred care and a space to reconnect with the body without demanding an outcome from it. Spring describes this work around connection with the self, heart and womb space. (Spring Acupuncture)
It isn’t a scientifically established treatment for infertility or grief, and massage shouldn’t be described as releasing fertility “blocks”.
Its purpose can be gentler than that.
Touch.
Rest.
Connection.
Care.
A moment of saying:
Body, you don’t have to prove anything to me today.
Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy: Making Space for the Spiritual Grief
Some parts of fertility grief aren’t asking for another clinical explanation.
They’re asking:
How do I keep hoping?
How do I trust myself again?
What do I do with the life I thought I’d have by now?
Who am I becoming through all of this?
Spring offers Reiki, tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy for women who want emotional, reflective, energetic or spiritual support alongside conventional fertility care. Spring explicitly positions these modalities as complementary rather than replacements for fertility medicine or IVF. (Spring Acupuncture)
There is some clinical research around Reiki and anxiety. A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 controlled studies involving 824 adults reported an association between Reiki interventions and reduced anxiety. However, these studies involved varied populations and do not demonstrate that Reiki treats infertility, fertility grief or improves pregnancy rates. (Springer Link)
Tarot can occupy a different space entirely.
Not:
“Tell me when I’ll get pregnant.”
But perhaps:
“Help me explore what I’m feeling.”
“What needs my attention right now?”
“What part of myself needs care?”
There can be room for ritual without turning ritual into medicine.
You can believe in science and still light the candle.
When Grief and Pregnancy Exist Together
Sometimes the thing you’ve been hoping for finally happens.
And yet the grief doesn’t necessarily disappear.
Pregnancy after infertility, IVF or loss can hold enormous joy alongside fear.
You may find yourself grieving everything it took to arrive there while simultaneously feeling incredibly grateful to be pregnant.
Spring’s care can continue through pregnancy acupuncture, naturopathy and pregnancy massage, where individually appropriate.
Research into massage during pregnancy has found potential benefits for anxiety and depressive symptoms. A systematic review and meta-analysis found moderate effects compared with usual care, although the researchers cautioned that the included trials had methodological limitations. (PubMed)
Finding Yourself Inside Fertility Grief
Healing doesn’t necessarily mean reaching a point where this experience no longer hurts.
Sometimes it means creating enough space around the grief that you can find yourself again.
You can go swimming.
Laugh.
Make plans.
Wear something beautiful.
Have sex without discussing ovulation.
Take the weekend away.
Write.
Cry.
Go to therapy.
Book acupuncture.
Sit underneath a tree.
Have dinner with someone who knows not to give you advice.
Turn your phone off.
Let somebody else carry something.
And when grief becomes overwhelming, persistent or starts significantly affecting everyday life, seeking support from a psychologist, counsellor, GP or other appropriately qualified mental-health professional is important.
There is good evidence that targeted psychological interventions can improve anxiety, depression and wellbeing in women experiencing infertility. (PubMed)
You don’t have to choose one form of support.
Your fertility specialist can care for one part.
Your psychologist another.
Your acupuncturist another.
Your partner, friends and family another.
And perhaps your rituals, spirituality and intuition can hold another piece again.

You don’t need all of them.
And none of them needs to become another thing you’re required to do perfectly.
The point is simply this:
You deserve support through the part nobody can see.
The baby you have imagined matters.
The timeline you pictured mattered.
The hope you carried mattered.
And if you’re grieving something you haven’t held yet, that doesn’t make the grief imaginary.
Sometimes healing begins when we stop trying to talk ourselves out of what hurts and finally allow someone to sit beside us in it.

FAQs: Fertility Grief & Emotional Fertility Support Brisbane
Is fertility grief a real form of grief?
Yes. Research has explored infertility through the framework of disenfranchised grief, where the loss may not be fully recognised or validated by others. Infertility can involve grief around fertility, imagined children, expected timelines, treatment outcomes and identity. (Sage Journals)
Why does infertility grief feel so lonely?
Unlike many losses, fertility grief can be largely invisible. Other people may not know what you’re experiencing or may respond with reassurance, advice or minimisation rather than acknowledging the loss. Research has found this invalidation can complicate women’s experiences of infertility grief. (Sage Journals)
Can acupuncture help with the emotional stress of IVF?
A systematic review and meta-analysis found a small reduction in IVF-related state anxiety associated with acupuncture, although the certainty of the evidence was very low. Acupuncture is best considered complementary support rather than a treatment for grief or a guarantee of fertility success. (PubMed)
What can help with fertility grief?
Support may include counselling or psychological therapy, appropriate medical fertility care, supportive relationships and complementary wellbeing practices. A 2025 systematic review found targeted psychological interventions could improve anxiety, depression and wellbeing among women experiencing infertility. (PubMed)
