If you’re trying to conceive, one of the most useful things you can learn is how to recognise when your body is approaching ovulation.
It can also be one of the most confusing parts of fertility.
One app says day 14. Your ovulation test says something else. Your cervical mucus changes, your temperature rises, your body feels different and suddenly trying to work out when you’re fertile starts to feel like solving a tiny hormonal crime scene every month.
So, how do you actually know when you’re ovulating?
There isn’t one perfect sign for everyone, but several physical clues can help you identify your fertile window and understand your individual cycle more clearly.
At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood, Brisbane, fertility care can include acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy, alongside pregnancy and postpartum support. (Spring Acupuncture)
The intention isn’t simply to track your body harder.
It’s to help you understand it, support it and feel more connected to yourself through the fertility journey.
What actually happens when you ovulate?
Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from one of your ovaries and becomes available for fertilisation.
The days surrounding this event make up your fertile window.
Importantly, ovulation does not always happen on cycle day 14.
The exact day varies depending on your cycle length and can vary from month to month.
That means a calendar or fertility app can provide an estimate, but your body’s own signs may give you much more useful information about what is happening in real time.
1. Look at your cervical mucus
One of the most practical ways to recognise approaching ovulation is to notice changes in cervical mucus.
As estrogen rises before ovulation, cervical mucus often becomes:
- wetter
- clearer
- slippery
- stretchy
- similar in consistency to raw egg white.
This fertile-type mucus helps create an environment that supports sperm movement and survival.
If you notice several days of increasingly slippery or stretchy mucus, this can be a strong clue that ovulation is approaching.
For many women, learning this one sign can make their cycle feel significantly less mysterious.
2. Use ovulation predictor kits
Ovulation predictor kits, or OPKs, measure luteinising hormone — LH — in urine.
LH usually surges shortly before ovulation, so a positive test suggests that your body may be preparing to release an egg.
However, an LH surge is not the same thing as absolute proof that ovulation occurred.
Certain hormonal conditions can produce multiple LH rises, and occasionally the body may attempt to ovulate without successfully releasing an egg.
That’s why combining OPKs with another method, such as cervical mucus or basal body temperature, can provide a clearer overall picture.
3. Track your basal body temperature
Basal body temperature, or BBT, is your temperature when your body is completely at rest.
After ovulation, progesterone causes a small sustained rise in basal temperature.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, this rise commonly happens around ovulation and remains elevated until the end of the cycle. Importantly, the most fertile days usually occur before the temperature increase, which means BBT is generally more useful for confirming that ovulation has occurred than predicting it in advance. (ACOG)
Over several cycles, you may begin to see your own pattern:
lower temperatures before ovulation → temperature shift → sustained higher temperatures afterwards.
For some women, seeing that pattern is incredibly reassuring.
4. Notice what your body is telling you
Some people experience other possible ovulation signs, such as:
mild pelvic sensations, increased libido, breast changes, increased energy, changes in mood or simply a feeling of being more socially or sexually engaged.
These signs are less reliable than hormone testing or cervical mucus, but they can still become useful pieces of your personal cycle puzzle.
This is where fertility awareness becomes less about following someone else’s chart and more about learning the language of your own body.
What if I don’t seem to be ovulating?
If you repeatedly do not see signs of ovulation, your periods are absent or very irregular, or your cycle has changed significantly, it is worth speaking with your GP, fertility specialist or other qualified healthcare professional.
Medical investigation may include hormone testing, ultrasound or assessment of other potential contributors to irregular or absent ovulation.
Complementary care can sit alongside that investigation.
At Spring, fertility naturopathy may offer an opportunity to look at areas such as nutrition, lifestyle, menstrual patterns, sleep, stress and supplement use within the context of your broader fertility care. Spring offers dedicated fertility and pregnancy naturopathy alongside its acupuncture and other services. (Spring Acupuncture)
Can acupuncture help with ovulation and fertility?
Acupuncture is commonly used as complementary fertility care, but the evidence needs to be communicated carefully.
Research into acupuncture and reproductive outcomes is mixed.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of 58 randomised trials involving 10,968 women undergoing IVF found associations between acupuncture and improved clinical pregnancy and live-birth outcomes, but the certainty of evidence ranged from low to extremely low, and researchers noted substantial differences in study design. (PubMed)
A separate review of acupuncture combined with traditional Chinese medicine for ovulatory dysfunction reported improvements in some hormonal and fertility measures, but again, study quality and heterogeneity mean these findings should not be interpreted as proof that acupuncture can make someone ovulate or become pregnant. (PubMed)
At Spring, fertility acupuncture can instead be viewed as complementary support within a wider fertility plan, not as a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment.
It may also offer something that charts and ovulation strips cannot:
an hour where you are allowed to stop analysing your body and simply receive care.
Chinese herbal medicine and ovulation
Chinese herbal medicine is another modality sometimes used for menstrual and fertility support.
A systematic review involving 15 studies and 1,659 participants with anovulatory infertility reported higher ovulation and pregnancy rates with Chinese herbal medicine compared with clomiphene in the included trials. However, the authors emphasised that the studies were generally of low quality and that better randomised trials were needed before firm recommendations could be made. (PubMed)
An updated meta-analysis also reported potentially favourable fertility outcomes with Chinese herbal medicine, although methodological limitations remain. (PubMed)
For that reason, Chinese herbs should be individually prescribed by an appropriately qualified practitioner, particularly if you are taking fertility medication or undergoing IVF.
Always tell your fertility specialist about herbs or supplements you are taking.
Womb Hara and fertility massage: reconnecting with your body
Spring also offers Womb Hara and fertility massage, blending abdominal and bodywork traditions in a nurturing treatment centred around the womb and abdominal area. Spring describes it as a space for women to feel held and reconnected with their bodies. (Spring Acupuncture)
There is not strong clinical evidence showing that womb massage induces ovulation or increases pregnancy rates.
Its value can be much more embodied.
Trying to conceive can turn the body into something you constantly inspect:
Is that fertile mucus?
Did my temperature rise?
Was that ovulation pain?
What does this test mean?
Massage can offer another relationship with your body – one based on warmth, care, touch and connection rather than measurement.
Spring also provides pregnancy and postpartum support, including pregnancy-related acupuncture and massage options as your journey changes. (Spring Acupuncture)
Fertility can be spiritual as well as medical
Ovulation is biological.
But trying to conceive often becomes emotional and spiritual too.
It can raise enormous questions about trust, motherhood, timing, grief, hope, control and identity.
Spring offers Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy alongside its clinical and complementary services. (Spring Acupuncture)
These modalities cannot diagnose whether you are ovulating, predict pregnancy or replace reproductive medicine.
They serve a different purpose.
Tarot might offer a reflective space to explore what this fertility chapter is bringing up for you.
Reiki may provide a ritual of stillness, relaxation and reconnection.
Cellular Resonance Therapy may be chosen by people seeking emotional or energetic support alongside their physical care.
Sometimes learning your fertility signs helps you understand your cycle.
Sometimes healing is also learning to hear yourself again.
When should I ask for fertility help?
If you are tracking your cycles but cannot identify ovulation, have highly irregular or absent periods, experience significant pelvic pain, or have been trying to conceive without success, speak with a medical professional.
A fertility evaluation can look beyond whether you are ovulating and consider other factors such as ovarian function, sperm health, reproductive anatomy and underlying conditions.
You don’t need to choose between conventional fertility medicine and holistic care.
For many women, the most supportive approach is a circle of care that draws on both.

FAQ: Ovulation + Fertility Brisbane
How do I know when I’m ovulating?
Common signs include clear, slippery and stretchy cervical mucus, a positive LH ovulation test and a sustained rise in basal body temperature after ovulation. Using several signs together can provide a more complete picture.
Does a positive ovulation test mean I definitely ovulated?
Not necessarily. An ovulation test detects an LH surge, which usually precedes ovulation, but it does not directly confirm that an egg was released. A sustained temperature shift or medical testing may provide additional confirmation.
Does basal body temperature tell me when I’m about to ovulate?
Usually not. BBT tends to rise after ovulation, making it more useful for confirming ovulation retrospectively and identifying patterns over several cycles. (ACOG)
Can you ovulate without egg-white cervical mucus?
Yes. Cervical mucus varies between individuals and cycles. Not everyone sees dramatic egg-white mucus every month, and factors such as hydration, medications and hormonal differences may affect what you notice.
Can acupuncture help me ovulate?
Some research has explored acupuncture for fertility and ovulatory disorders, but the overall evidence remains uncertain and varies substantially between studies. Acupuncture should be considered complementary care rather than a guaranteed way to induce ovulation. (PubMed)
