If you’re trying for a baby, sex can very quickly stop feeling spontaneous and start feeling like another item on the fertility spreadsheet.

What day are you on?

Has the ovulation test turned positive?

Was that cervical mucus fertile?

Did you have sex yesterday?

Should you have sex again tonight?

And, perhaps the most common question of all:

How often should we have sex when trying to conceive?

The reassuring answer is that you do not need to hit one perfect hour or turn intimacy into a military operation.

Australian government fertility guidance recommends having unprotected vaginal sex approximately every two to three days in the week before and around ovulation. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, while the egg generally survives for around 24 hours after ovulation. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine goes a little further, noting that reproductive efficiency is highest when intercourse occurs every one to two days during the fertile window, although daily, every-other-day and even every-three-day intercourse have produced similar cycle conception rates in research. Having sex only once during the fertile window appears less effective. (ASRM)

So the practical answer?

Every one to three days around your fertile window is generally plenty.

And there is no evidence that couples need to deliberately “save sperm” by avoiding more frequent sex when semen parameters are normal. (ASRM)

At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood, Brisbane, fertility support is about understanding these practical foundations while also caring for the whole human being going through them. Spring offers fertility and IVF acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy, along with pregnancy and postpartum care. (Spring Acupuncture)

When should we have sex to get pregnant?

Timing matters more than obsessing over an exact number of times.

Your fertile window includes the days leading up to ovulation and ovulation day itself.

Because sperm can survive for several days, having sex before you ovulate is especially useful. It means sperm may already be present when the egg is released. Australian guidance therefore recommends regular sex in the week leading up to and around ovulation. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

You might identify this time through:

  • changes in cervical mucus
  • ovulation predictor kits
  • cycle tracking
  • basal body temperature patterns
  • knowing your usual cycle length.

But even with regular cycles, the exact timing of the fertile window can change from month to month. (ASRM)

This is why sex every two or three days throughout the cycle can be a wonderfully uncomplicated option if intensive ovulation tracking is making you anxious.

Is sex every day better for conception?

Possibly slightly but probably not enough to make yourself miserable over it.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine reports that the highest reproductive efficiency is seen with intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window. However, studies have found fairly similar chances when sex occurs daily, every second day or every third day during that period. (ASRM)

In other words:

If you genuinely want sex every day, you do not need to avoid it.

If every second day feels manageable, excellent.

If every two to three days keeps your relationship from turning into an ovulation bootcamp, that is also a very reasonable approach.

Fertility care should support your life rather than consume it.

When sex starts feeling like another fertility treatment

This is a part of trying to conceive that doesn’t get talked about enough.

Sex can quietly become:

Did we do it on the right day?

rather than:

Do we actually want each other tonight?

Scheduling sex can be useful, particularly when timing matters, but months or years of TTC can understandably affect intimacy, libido and connection.

There is no fertility prize for turning your relationship into an optimisation project.

Sometimes part of supporting fertility is making room for pleasure, affection, humour and closeness again even when conception is very much on your mind.

This is one reason Spring’s approach extends beyond ovulation dates and physical treatments to the emotional and spiritual experience of fertility.

How fertility acupuncture may support your TTC journey

Spring offers female fertility acupuncture, male fertility acupuncture and IVF acupuncture at its Springwood clinic. (Spring Acupuncture)

Research into acupuncture and conception outcomes is mixed, so acupuncture should not be presented as something that guarantees pregnancy or makes intercourse more “effective.”

Instead, it can sit alongside evidence-based fertility care as a complementary therapy.

For some people, that hour on the treatment table becomes an opportunity to stop analysing timing, tests and symptoms and simply receive care.

Spring also tailors its acupuncture services around natural conception, IVF and different stages of pregnancy. (Spring Acupuncture)

Remember: fertility belongs to both partners

The burden of fertility tracking often lands disproportionately on the woman.

But sperm contributes half of the genetic material involved in conception.

Spring therefore offers male fertility acupuncture as well as female fertility support, reflecting a more complete approach to conception. (Spring Acupuncture)

If pregnancy is taking longer than expected, semen analysis and appropriate medical investigation can be just as important as tracking ovulation.

Trying harder or having sex more frequently cannot compensate for a fertility issue that actually requires investigation.

Naturopathy and preconception health

Spring’s fertility and pregnancy naturopathy may help couples take a broader look at preconception health, including diet, supplementation, lifestyle and general wellbeing. (Spring Acupuncture)

Rather than collecting increasingly elaborate fertility hacks from the internet, individualised support can help you work out what is relevant to you.

That might include reviewing nutritional intake, supplements or lifestyle patterns alongside appropriate care from your GP or fertility specialist.

Sometimes the most useful fertility strategy is not doing more.

It is becoming clearer about what actually matters.

Chinese herbal medicine and fertility

Chinese herbal medicine may also be incorporated into Spring’s fertility care where clinically appropriate. Spring integrates Chinese medicine principles into its fertility services alongside acupuncture and lifestyle guidance. (Spring Acupuncture)

Herbal medicine is not something to add casually while undergoing fertility treatment.

If you are using ovulation-induction medication or IVF drugs, always tell both your fertility specialist and Chinese medicine practitioner about everything you are taking.

Natural does not automatically mean free from interactions.

Womb Hara and fertility massage

Spring also offers Womb Hara, fertility and postpartum massage, drawing on abdominal massage and bodywork traditions. (Spring Acupuncture)

There is not good clinical evidence that fertility massage itself increases conception rates, so it should not be treated as a substitute for fertility investigation or medical treatment.

Its role may be much more nurturing.

Trying to conceive can make the pelvis and womb feel like areas you are constantly inspecting, tracking and waiting on.

Bodywork can instead offer an opportunity for touch, embodiment and reconnection.

If pregnancy occurs, Spring’s pregnancy and postpartum services can then support you through the next stage of your journey. (Spring Acupuncture)

Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy

Then there is the part of TTC that cannot be measured on an ovulation strip.

The fear.

The waiting.

The disappointment.

The enormous hope attached to what might happen this month.

Spring offers Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy alongside its fertility services. (Spring Acupuncture)

These are not medical fertility treatments and should not be used to predict pregnancy or replace fertility investigation.

Their role is different.

Reiki may provide a gentle ritual of rest and reconnection.

Tarot may create a reflective space for exploring questions around identity, hope, motherhood, fear and change.

Spring describes Cellular Resonance Therapy as an energetic wellbeing modality focused on emotional patterns, embodiment and personal wholeness. (Spring Acupuncture)

Sometimes you need to know your fertile window.

Sometimes you need someone to ask:

How are you actually doing inside all of this?

Both can matter.

And what happens when pregnancy finally comes?

Once you become pregnant, the goal naturally shifts from conception towards supporting pregnancy.

Spring also offers pregnancy acupuncture, pregnancy and postpartum naturopathy, and pregnancy-related massage and supportive care, allowing women who have been seeing the clinic through fertility treatment to continue receiving care as their needs change. (Spring Acupuncture)

That continuity can be especially meaningful after a long TTC or IVF journey.

Fertility Support in Springwood, Brisbane

So, how often should you have sex when trying to conceive?

A practical evidence-based starting point is:

Every one to two days during your fertile window, or approximately every two to three days in the week leading up to and around ovulation if that feels simpler. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

You don’t need to hit one mythical perfect moment.

And you do not need to spend the entire month thinking about sperm and eggs.

Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood on Brisbane’s southside offers fertility, IVF, pregnancy and women’s health support, with services spanning acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, fertility massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. The clinic is also located next to The Fertility Centre in Springwood. (Spring Acupuncture)

Because conception may be biological.

But the experience of trying to create a baby is physical, emotional, relational and sometimes deeply spiritual too.

You deserve support for all of it.

FAQ: Sex, Fertile Window + Trying to Conceive

How often should we have sex when trying to conceive?

Evidence suggests intercourse every one to two days during the fertile window provides very good exposure to the fertile period. Australian health guidance also recommends sex approximately every two to three days in the week before and around ovulation. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

Is every day or every other day better when trying for a baby?

Both are reasonable. Research summarised by ASRM found conception rates were similar with intercourse every day, every other day and even every three days during the fertile window, although intercourse only once during the window resulted in lower fecundity. (ASRM)

Should we save sperm before ovulation?

Generally, no. More frequent intercourse is not associated with lower fertility for most couples, and ASRM advises couples should not routinely be told to limit intercourse frequency when trying to conceive. (ASRM)

When is the best time to have sex to get pregnant?

The best time is during the days leading up to and including ovulation. Because sperm can survive for up to five days, intercourse before ovulation is particularly important. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

What if timing sex is becoming stressful?

You can consider regular intercourse every two to three days rather than trying to pinpoint one exact ovulation day. If TTC is affecting intimacy or emotional wellbeing, discuss this with your healthcare provider or seek appropriate psychological or relationship support.

Can acupuncture help fertility?

Research on acupuncture and pregnancy outcomes is mixed. It is best viewed as complementary care alongside appropriate medical fertility investigation rather than a guaranteed method of increasing conception or live-birth rates.
