The Stress–Progesterone Connection :
And Why It Matters When You’re Trying to Conceive
If you’re trying to conceive and you’ve been told your hormone levels are “normal” but you still haven’t fallen pregnant, this blog is for you.
Let’s talk about progesterone—your calm, steady, baby-holding hormone. It’s absolutely essential after ovulation and in early pregnancy. But here’s the problem: stress can deplete it.
When your body is under chronic stress, it prioritises cortisol (your main stress hormone) over progesterone. Why? Because from an evolutionary standpoint, survival always trumps reproduction. Your body doesn’t know the difference between life-or-death stress and the mental load of juggling work, appointments, family, and fertility treatments.
This is called the pregnenolone steal—and it’s a major reason we see luteal phase defects, implantation issues, and early miscarriage in people under high stress.
The Pregnenolone Steal:
When Your Body Chooses Cortisol Over Progesterone
Let’s go a little deeper into the hormone chemistry behind stress and progesterone.
Your body makes all steroid hormones—from cortisol to progesterone to oestrogen—from one raw ingredient: cholesterol. Cholesterol is converted into pregnenolone, often referred to as the “mother hormone” because it’s the precursor to everything: DHEA, testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone, and—yes—cortisol.
When you’re calm and balanced, your body can allocate pregnenolone toward reproductive hormones like progesterone. But when you’re stressed, your brain sends a signal to the adrenal glands to produce more cortisol so you can “survive” the perceived threat.
Here’s the kicker: cortisol production takes priority over everything else, including fertility. So your body begins funnelling pregnenolone toward cortisol instead of progesterone. This phenomenon is known as the pregnenolone steal.
In the short term, this helps you adapt to stress. But when stress becomes chronic, this hijacking of resources can leave you with:
-
Lower progesterone output
-
A disrupted luteal phase
-
Difficulty maintaining a healthy endometrial lining
-
Poor implantation or early miscarriage
It’s not that your body “forgets” how to make progesterone—it just doesn’t have the bandwidth when it’s stuck in survival mode.
This is why even if you’re ovulating, you may not be producing enough progesterone to hold a pregnancy. And why stress support isn’t a luxury when trying to conceive—it’s foundational.
Why Progesterone Is Critical for Conception and Early Pregnancy
Progesterone does a lot of heavy lifting in your fertility journey. It’s functions in the body help with:
-
Preparing and thickening of the uterine lining for implantation
-
Calms uterine contractions to reduce miscarriage risk
-
Supports early placental development
-
Helps regulate immune tolerance to protect the embryo
Which is why low progesterone levels can lead to:
-
Spotting before your period
-
A short luteal phase
-
Failed implantation
-
Early miscarriage
-
Unexplained infertility despite regular ovulation
So how do you know if your progesterone might be low???
Signs Your Progesterone Levels Might Be Low
Here are some common symptoms that may be telling you that your progesterone may be on the lower side:
-
Spotting before your period (especially brown or pink discharge 2–4 days before)
-
Luteal phase shorter than 10–12 days
-
Early miscarriage or chemical pregnancies
-
Difficulty conceiving even with regular ovulation
-
PMS symptoms like mood swings, irritability, or breast tenderness
-
Feeling cold or fatigued in the second half of your cycle
-
Low libido or vaginal dryness
-
Waking between 1–3am regularly
-
Low post-ovulation temperatures on your BBT chart
If you tick a few of these boxes, it’s worth testing your serum progesterone 7 days post-ovulation. But just as important is looking at what’s draining your progesterone in the first place—hello, cortisol.
How Stress Hijacks Progesterone Production
When you’re stressed, your adrenal glands pump out cortisol to help you respond. But to make cortisol, your body uses pregnenolone, the same hormone precursor used to make progesterone.
In times of stress, pregnenolone gets “stolen” to keep up with the demand for cortisol, leaving your progesterone production compromised. This hormonal shift is often behind:
-
Spotting or early periods
-
Poor endometrial lining
-
Failed embryo implantation
-
Low pregnancy hormone levels after a positive test
And the cycle repeats—because low progesterone leads to more stress on the body.
5 Ways to Reduce Cortisol and Support Healthy
Progesterone Levels
1. Get Acupuncture (It Works, and We’ve Got the Research)
Acupuncture helps regulate your HPA axis (the stress response system), lowers cortisol, and increases blood flow to your ovaries and uterus. It’s one of the best tools to:
-
Improve luteal phase health
-
Reduce early miscarriage risk
-
Calm the nervous system for optimal conception

2. Eat a Nutrient-Dense, Ancestral Diet
The building blocks of progesterone? Cholesterol, zinc, vitamin B6, and magnesium. You’ll find them in:
-
Grass-fed red meat
-
Organic pasture-raised eggs
-
Liver and organ meats
-
Raw dairy
-
Bone broth
Eating balanced meals every 3–4 hours also helps stabilise blood sugar, which lowers cortisol and supports hormonal stability.
3. Prioritise Deep, Restorative Sleep
You can’t repair what you don’t rest. Poor sleep = high cortisol and hormonal chaos.
-
Aim for 8+ hours of sleep per night
-
Be asleep before 10pm to support circadian rhythm
-
Block out blue light 1–2 hours before bed (ie. no screens – read a book under a red light to wind down)
-
Keep your room dark, cool, and WiFi-free
Sleep is progesterone’s best friend.
4. Regulate Your Nervous System Every Single Day
This is non-negotiable if you’re TTC. Here are a few simple, powerful tools:
-
Qi Gong
-
Hypnosis
-
Vagal tone exercises (gargling, humming, cold plunges)
-
Breathwork (try a 4-count inhale, 8-count exhale)
-
NLP techniques (we use these in clinic!)
We use these tools in-clinic to guide your system out of fight-or-flight and into a calm, fertile state.
5. Use Herbal and Nutritional Support Wisely
With the right guidance, herbs and nutrients can deeply support your progesterone levels and stress response. Depending on your pattern, you may benefit from:
-
Vitex agnus-castus to lengthen luteal phase
-
B6 and magnesium for hormone synthesis
-
Rehmannia, Withania (Ashwagandha), or licorice root to calm cortisol
-
Chinese herbal formulas that support luteal phase via nourishing the yang, holding and raising energy of the body.

FAQ
Q: Can stress cause low progesterone?
A: Yes. Stress increases cortisol production, which depletes the precursors needed for progesterone. This can lead to luteal phase defects and early pregnancy loss.
Q: How do I know if my progesterone is low?
A: Common signs include spotting before your period, a short luteal phase, fatigue, early miscarriage, and PMS symptoms. Blood tests 7 days post-ovulation can confirm it.
Q: Can acupuncture increase progesterone?
A: Yes. Research shows acupuncture reduces cortisol, supports luteal phase health, and improves reproductive blood flow, all of which can help support progesterone production.
Q: What foods support healthy progesterone?
A: Nutrient-dense animal foods like liver, eggs, red meat, and raw dairy provide essential nutrients like B6, zinc, and cholesterol needed for hormone synthesis.
Q: What herbs are best for low progesterone?
A: Vitex, Withania, Rehmannia, and certain Chinese herbal formulas may be used—but always under the care of a trained practitioner.
