This week we have been focusing on how to increase your uterine lining for IVF and natural conception. A healthy and thick uterine lining is vital for implantation to occur and a healthy pregnancy to take hold. The lining of the uterus is made up of endometrium and it provides nutrients for the embryo once it has implanted into the uterine wall and begins to grow.

In TCM, we talk about blood being a vital substance. This is especially true when it comes to conception and pregnancy. Blood carries nutrients around the body and, regardless of how your plan to conceive, the uterus needs plenty of blood and nutrients to ensure the embryo has the best chance of developing into a happy and healthy baby. For our patients, we encourage them to focus on building blood through diet changes, acupuncture and healthy lifestyle. Here are a few of the tips we share with our patients to increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the uterine lining in the months prior to trying to conceive.

Blood-Building Foods

Blood-building foods are essentially foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals such as iron, folic acid, and vitamin b12. These are all nutrients that increase red blood cell production, improve the function of the blood, and increase the thickness of the uterine lining. Blood nourishing foods include:

Bone Broth
Good quality organic meats, especially lean red meat, and beef or chicken liver
Cooked dark leafy greens, like spinach, kale and broccoli
Kelp and Spirulina
Beetroot
Beans and Lentils
Dried figs and dates
Berries
Tip: slow-cooked soups and stews are fantastic for blood production! Ginger and garlic and great spices to help make everything super tasty and they are great for the production of blood!

AVOID:

Sugar
Caffeine
Alcohol
Soy
Tip: Cold, raw, damp foods such as diary and ice-cream are not so great for blood production so make sure everything you eat is cooked with plenty of spices such as ginger.

Life Style Changes

Working with the physical body is a huge piece of the pulse to increase blood flow to the uterus and increase uterine lining.

Exercise – at least 30 minutes of daily exercise to get the heart rate up. Low impact and gentle exercises such as brisk walking, gentle yoga or even swimming are perfect!
Sleep – sleep is so so important for hormonal regulation! Getting at least 8 hours of deep, revitalising sleep will help not only make you feel amazing but regulate the female hormones that control the menstrual cycle, conception and pregnancy including Estrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH.
Acupuncture – Acupuncture works with the physical body to increase blood circulation, balances hormones and reduces the effect of stress on the body… all great things for conception! Acupuncture works by increasing the blood circulation of the whole body, specifically towards the uterus to assist in conception.
