Research: Nausea in Pregnancy

Research on acupuncture for nausea in pregnancy has found it to be both a safe and effective treatment for women who experience nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy.(1,2)

Research: Acupuncture for Pelvic Pain In Pregnancy

A study published in the British Medical Journal found that ‘acupuncture was superior to stabilising exercisers (provided by physiotherapists) in the management of pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy.(3) With acupuncture the treatment of choice for patients with one sided sacroiliac pain, one sided sacroiliac pain combined with symphysis pubis pain and double sided sacroiliac pain.’(3)

Research: Breech Presentation

In December, 2012 the British Medical Journal published an article investigating the use of moxibustion in primary healthcare to correct non-vertex presentation. They concluded that moxibustion at acupuncture point BL 67 is effective and safe to correct non-vertex presentation when used between 33-35 weeks (4). Furthermore, they reported, ‘we believe moxibustion to represent a treatment option that should be considered to achieve version of the non-vertex fetus’ (4).

Another research article by Cardini and Weixin concluded that ‘that offering acupuncture type interventions at BL 67 to women with a breech foetus at 33 weeks gestation reduced the number of breech presentations at term, the number of caesarean sections required, and was cost effective when compared to expectant management.’(5)

Research: Acupuncture use for the treatment of depression in pregnancy

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists published a research article that found that ‘the short acupuncture protocol demonstrated symptom reduction and a response rate comparable to those observed in standard depression treatments of similar length and could be a viable treatment option for depression during pregnancy.’ (6)
