When you’re trying for a baby, food can suddenly feel incredibly high stakes.

Should you eat more protein?

Cut out gluten?

Drink green juice?

Take fifty supplements?

Go dairy-free?

Follow a Mediterranean diet?

And somewhere between Instagram fertility advice and the supplement aisle, eating can start to feel less like nourishment and more like another test you might accidentally fail.

The evidence is far less dramatic.

There is no single “fertility food” that guarantees pregnancy. But eating a varied, nutrient-rich diet before conception can support your overall health and help prepare your body for pregnancy.

Australian preconception guidance recommends a nutritious diet, regular physical activity, a healthy weight where possible, avoiding smoking and alcohol, and discussing medicines and supplements with your doctor before trying to conceive. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood, Brisbane, fertility care can bring those practical foundations together with naturopathy, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, pregnancy massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. (Spring Acupuncture)

The aim is not to create a perfect fertility diet.

It is to help you feel nourished, informed and supported.

Is there a best diet for fertility?

Researchers have investigated many different dietary patterns, but there is currently no scientifically proven diet that guarantees improved fertility.

One of the most studied is a Mediterranean-style pattern, typically rich in vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil and seafood.

A systematic review of preconception diet research found that Mediterranean-style eating showed some of the strongest and most consistent associations with clinical pregnancy rates among the dietary patterns studied. Lower consumption of trans fats, saturated fats, fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages was also associated with better outcomes in some studies. However, researchers concluded that the evidence was still too heterogeneous to prescribe one specific fertility diet. (PubMed)

Another systematic review and meta-analysis involving more than 13,000 women and 1,300 men found potentially favourable associations between Mediterranean-diet adherence and some fertility markers, particularly sperm concentration and count, but concluded that the evidence remained insufficient for firm clinical recommendations. (PubMed)

So rather than asking:

“What magical thing should I eat to get pregnant?”

A better question may be:

“How can I consistently nourish my body while I’m preparing for pregnancy?”

What should a fertility-friendly plate look like?

You do not need an elaborate fertility menu.

Australian health guidance recommends eating across the five food groups, including vegetables, fruit, grains, protein-rich foods and dairy or appropriate alternatives. (Healthdirect)

A practical preconception meal might contain:

  • plenty of vegetables or salad
  • a protein source such as fish, lean meat, chicken, eggs, tofu, legumes or beans
  • wholegrain or high-fibre carbohydrates
  • healthy fats from foods such as nuts, seeds, avocado or olive oil
  • fruit and dairy or fortified alternatives across the day.

That could be as uncomplicated as salmon, roast vegetables and potatoes.

Or lentil curry with rice and greens.

Or eggs on wholegrain toast with avocado and tomatoes.

Your fertility diet does not need to look aesthetically impressive.

It needs to be something you can actually eat consistently.

Folate matters before pregnancy

One nutrient deserves particular attention before conception: folate.

Folate is essential for the early development of the neural tube, which later develops into the brain and spinal cord.

Australian guidance generally recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily before conception and during early pregnancy. Healthdirect recommends starting around 12 weeks before trying, while Pregnancy, Birth and Baby advises starting at least one month before conception. (Healthdirect)

Food sources of folate include:

green leafy vegetables, broccoli, oranges, avocado, wholegrain foods and some fortified breads and cereals. (Healthdirect)

Food is important, but because folate requirements are high around conception, Australian guidance still recommends supplementation.

Some people require a higher dose, so speak with your GP rather than automatically assuming more is better.

Don’t forget iodine

Iodine is another important preconception nutrient because it is needed for fetal brain and nervous-system development.

Australian health guidance recommends a 150 microgram iodine supplement each day while planning pregnancy, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. (Healthdirect)

Dietary sources include seafood, fortified bread and dairy products.

If you have a thyroid condition, however, speak with your doctor before taking iodine because too much can also affect thyroid function. (Healthdirect)

This is a good example of why personalised fertility nutrition is more useful than copying somebody else’s supplement routine.

What about iron, vitamin D and other supplements?

Depending on your diet, health history and blood results, nutrients such as iron, vitamin D, B12 or others may require attention.

But this does not mean everyone trying to conceive should take large amounts of everything.

Australian pregnancy guidance specifically notes that some women require additional iron or vitamin D, while folic acid and iodine are routinely recommended. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

This is where testing and individual advice can save you from the very common fertility phenomenon of accumulating an entire kitchen cupboard of supplements without knowing which ones you actually need.

How Spring’s fertility naturopathy may help

Spring offers dedicated Fertility & Pregnancy Naturopathy in Springwood.

Their naturopathy service focuses on preconception health as well as pregnancy and postpartum care. (Spring Acupuncture)

A fertility naturopathy consultation may help you review:

your usual diet, nutritional intake, supplement use, lifestyle, sleep and broader health picture.

It can also help you identify questions worth discussing with your GP or fertility specialist.

This is particularly useful if you have found yourself bouncing between radically different internet diets.

Keto.

Vegan.

Gluten-free.

Carnivore.

Fasting.

“Fertility smoothies.”

Seed cycling.

A personalised plan can bring the focus back to you, rather than the fertility trend currently shouting the loudest online.

Fertility acupuncture and Chinese medicine

Spring also offers female fertility acupuncture, male fertility acupuncture and IVF acupuncture, alongside Chinese medicine and dietary guidance. (Spring Acupuncture)

Acupuncture should not be viewed as a replacement for nutrition, fertility investigation or medical treatment, and research into its effect on conception and live-birth outcomes remains mixed.

Its role may instead be complementary: providing regular care during a fertility or IVF journey while your wider healthcare team addresses medical, nutritional and lifestyle factors.

Chinese herbal medicine may also be considered following an individual assessment.

This is especially important because herbs can interact with medications and may not be appropriate during every stage of IVF, conception or pregnancy. Spring advises fertility clients to coordinate complementary therapies with their broader medical care. (Spring Acupuncture)

Womb Hara massage and the act of receiving nourishment

Spring’s Womb Hara and fertility massage combines several abdominal and bodywork traditions and is offered as a nurturing, embodied treatment. (Spring Acupuncture)

There isn’t strong clinical evidence that womb massage improves pregnancy rates, so it should not be presented as a nutritional or medical fertility treatment.

But there is another kind of nourishment that matters during TTC.

Being touched with care.

Resting.

Allowing someone else to hold the space for an hour.

Remembering that your body is more than something you are trying to optimise.

If pregnancy occurs, appropriately delivered pregnancy massage may then support comfort and relaxation during the next stage, where suitable for the individual pregnancy. (Spring Acupuncture)

What should I avoid while trying to conceive?

Australian preconception guidance recommends avoiding alcohol, smoking and vaping and limiting foods high in added sugar, salt and saturated fat. It also advises avoiding high-mercury fish and vitamin A supplements before pregnancy because excessive vitamin A can pose pregnancy risks. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)

That does not mean you need to panic every time you eat chocolate or takeaway.

Healthy eating is a pattern.

One meal does not make or break fertility.

It can be far more sustainable to think:

mostly nourishing, varied, satisfying food

rather than:

perfect fertility food at all times.

The spiritual side of nourishment

Food also carries meaning.

It is ritual.

Comfort.

Family.

Pleasure.

Culture.

A way of saying to the body:

I am listening. I am tending. I am here.

Spring’s broader fertility offering includes Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy for people wanting emotional or spiritual support alongside clinical care. (Spring Acupuncture)

These modalities cannot improve nutrition, correct a deficiency or guarantee pregnancy.

Their purpose is different.

Reiki may offer a quiet space to rest.

Tarot can become a reflective tool for exploring fear, hope, identity and change.

Cellular Resonance Therapy may appeal to people wanting to explore the emotional or energetic aspects of their fertility experience.

Trying to conceive can make you feel as though your body is constantly being graded.

Sometimes nourishment means nutrients.

Sometimes nourishment means sitting at a table, eating a warm meal and remembering that your body deserves to be cared for regardless of this month’s result.

Fertility Nutrition and Holistic Support in Brisbane

So, what should you eat when trying to conceive?

Start with the boring-but-powerful foundations:

A varied diet.

Plenty of vegetables and fruit.

Whole grains and fibre.

Adequate protein.

Healthy fats.

Folate-rich foods.

Seafood where appropriate.

Folic acid and iodine according to Australian guidance.

Less alcohol, highly processed food and smoking.

And seek individual advice where your medical history, diet or fertility treatment makes things more complicated. (Healthdirect)

At Spring Acupuncture, 10A, 3352 Pacific Highway, Springwood QLD 4127, fertility support can incorporate naturopathy, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Womb Hara and fertility massage, pregnancy massage, Reiki, Tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy alongside conventional fertility care. (Spring Acupuncture)

Because preparing for pregnancy is not about eating perfectly.

It is about creating a foundation of nourishment — physically, emotionally and sometimes spiritually — from which you can move forward.

FAQ: Fertility Diet + Nutrition

What should I eat when trying to conceive?

Aim for a varied diet containing vegetables, fruit, whole grains, protein-rich foods and healthy fats. Mediterranean-style eating has shown promising associations with fertility outcomes, although there is not enough evidence to prescribe one specific fertility diet. (PubMed)

Is there a fertility diet scientifically proven to help you get pregnant?

No specific diet has been proven to guarantee conception. Mediterranean-style patterns have the strongest supportive observational evidence among commonly studied diets, but systematic reviews say the evidence remains limited. (PubMed)

Should I take folic acid before trying to conceive?

Yes. Australian guidance generally recommends at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, beginning before conception and continuing through early pregnancy. Some people need a higher prescribed dose. (Healthdirect)

Should I take iodine when trying for a baby?

Australian guidance recommends 150 micrograms of iodine daily when planning pregnancy, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. People with thyroid conditions should speak to their doctor before supplementing. (Healthdirect)

Should I stop drinking alcohol while trying to conceive?

Australian preconception guidance recommends avoiding alcohol while trying for pregnancy. (Pregnancy Birth Baby)
