Can acupuncture support fertility?
Acupuncture is commonly used by people trying to conceive naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive treatment. Some people value it for relaxation, symptom support and the sense of having regular, personalised care during an uncertain time.
The evidence regarding pregnancy and live-birth outcomes is mixed. A large Australian randomised clinical trial involving 824 women undergoing IVF found no significant difference in live births between acupuncture and sham acupuncture. A later systematic review similarly found no statistically significant effect when acupuncture around embryo transfer was compared with placebo acupuncture.
Other systematic reviews have reported possible improvements in some pregnancy outcomes, but researchers have highlighted substantial differences in treatment protocols, study quality and participant groups. This means the evidence is not strong enough to promise that acupuncture will improve the likelihood of conception or live birth.
That uncertainty matters. Fertility patients deserve honest information, not guarantees.
