I’m Terrified My Fertility Journey Will Never End
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that arrives when trying to conceive stops feeling like a season and begins to feel like your entire life.
At first, you count months.
Then treatment cycles.
Then birthdays.
Christmases.
Pregnancy announcements.
Appointments.
Blood tests.
Embryo transfers.
Conversations that begin with “What do we try next?”
Eventually, the hardest part may no longer be one negative result. It may be the fear that there will never be a clear ending.
You may wonder whether to keep trying, change direction, pause treatment, seek another opinion or protect yourself from hoping again.
You may feel guilty for wanting a break and terrified that resting will cost you precious time.
At Spring Acupuncture Clinic in Springwood, Brisbane, we meet many women and couples living inside this uncertainty.
The first thing we want you to know is simple:
Feeling overwhelmed by an open-ended fertility journey is not a sign that you are weak. It is a human response to carrying hope, uncertainty and repeated disappointment for too long.
Why fertility uncertainty feels so difficult
The mind naturally looks for resolution.
We want to know what is happening, why it is happening and when it will end.
Fertility rarely offers that kind of certainty.
Even after testing, you may not receive a complete explanation. Even with a carefully planned IVF cycle, there may be no guarantee of the outcome. Each decision can lead to another decision, another wait and another set of possibilities.
Research has identified uncertainty as an important source of psychological distress during fertility treatment. An early study of emotional reactions during IVF found that uncertainty surrounding treatment procedures was a major influence on how patients responded emotionally. More recent research has also linked difficulty tolerating uncertainty with higher distress among women experiencing delayed IVF treatment.
A 2024 global review found that infertility can significantly affect anxiety, depression, stress and quality of life, while a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis reported greater stress, anxiety and depression – and lower quality of life – among women experiencing infertility compared with men experiencing infertility.
This does not mean that distress causes infertility.
One prospective IVF study cautiously concluded that psychological and physiological stress did not appear to negatively affect IVF outcomes. You are not responsible for “thinking positively enough,” relaxing perfectly or maintaining an ideal emotional state in order to become pregnant.
Your emotional wellbeing still matters deeply – not because you must be calm to conceive, but because you deserve support while living through something difficult.
When trying to conceive becomes your whole life
A prolonged fertility journey can quietly narrow your world.
You may stop planning holidays because you do not know whether you will be pregnant.
You may delay changing jobs because another treatment cycle is approaching.
You may avoid celebrations, social media or friends with young children because the emotional cost feels too high.
Your calendar may become organised around ovulation, medications, scans and clinic appointments.
Even joyful moments can feel conditional:
I’ll relax after the next blood test.
I’ll make plans after this cycle.
I’ll feel like myself again when this is over.
But when there is no clear ending, life can begin to feel suspended.
This is one reason fertility care should include more than treatment protocols. The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology has published guidance recognising that patients can experience changing psychosocial needs throughout the fertility-treatment pathway and that clinics should be able to identify and respond to those needs.
You are allowed to be tired without giving up
Treatment fatigue does not necessarily mean you no longer want a baby.
It may mean you have been strong for too long without enough places to soften.
You are allowed to question the pace.
You are allowed to ask what another cycle may cost you physically, emotionally, relationally and financially.
You are allowed to seek another medical opinion.
You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to continue.
You are allowed to change your mind.
Resting is not failure, and continuing is not foolish. These are deeply personal decisions that deserve thoughtful medical guidance, emotional support and time.
How acupuncture may support you during a long fertility journey
Many people seek fertility acupuncture because they want supportive care that sits alongside their medical treatment.
Research does not establish acupuncture as a guaranteed way to improve pregnancy or live-birth outcomes. Its role should therefore be described honestly: as complementary care that some patients use for relaxation, symptom support, general wellbeing and a regular space in which they feel heard.
At Spring, a fertility acupuncture appointment is not treated as another task to complete perfectly.
It can be a place to slow down.
To speak honestly about how you are coping.
To reconnect with your body without examining it for signs of success or failure.
To receive care that is centred on you – not only your next result.
Holistic fertility support at Spring Acupuncture Clinic
Spring offers a range of in-person and supportive services for women and couples navigating fertility, IVF, pregnancy and women’s health in Springwood on Brisbane’s southside. The clinic currently lists acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, womb massage, pregnancy massage, Reiki, tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy among its offerings.
Fertility and IVF acupuncture
Acupuncture can be incorporated into your natural-conception or assisted-reproduction journey as complementary care. Your practitioner should know where you are in your cycle and what medical treatment, medication or procedures you are receiving.
Naturopathy
Naturopathy may help you review nutrition, lifestyle, sleep and supplement use. Supplements should be chosen carefully and discussed with your medical team, particularly during IVF or pregnancy.
Chinese herbal medicine
Chinese herbal medicine may be considered following an individual assessment by a qualified practitioner. Always disclose herbs and supplements to your GP and fertility specialist because they may interact with medication or be unsuitable during particular treatment stages.
Womb massage
Womb or fertility massage may offer a nurturing way to reconnect with an area of the body that has begun to feel medicalised or scrutinised. It should be understood as supportive bodywork rather than a treatment proven to resolve infertility.
Pregnancy massage
If pregnancy occurs, appropriately delivered pregnancy massage may support comfort and relaxation. Suitability should be confirmed when there are complications or a high-risk pregnancy.
Reiki
Reiki may provide a quiet ritual of rest and reflection. It is an energetic or spiritual practice rather than a medical treatment for infertility.
Tarot
Tarot cannot predict whether or when pregnancy will occur. It may, however, offer a reflective framework for exploring fear, identity, choices and the meaning you are making from this season.
Cellular Resonance Therapy
Spring describes Cellular Resonance Therapy as an energetic wellbeing modality focused on emotional patterns, safety in the body and personal wholeness. It should remain complementary to – not a substitute for – medical fertility investigation or psychological care.
Bringing the spiritual and medical worlds together
Fertility care does not have to force you to choose between science and soul.
Medical care can investigate ovulation, sperm health, ovarian reserve, tubal factors, endometriosis, PCOS and other possible contributors.
Supportive care can help you tend to the human being living through those investigations.
One world asks:
What does the evidence show?
The other asks:
How are you carrying this?
Both questions matter.
The spiritual invitation is not to pretend that everything happens for a reason or that the universe owes you a particular outcome.
It may simply be to remain in relationship with yourself while the outcome is unknown.
To remember that your identity is larger than your fertility chart.
To notice that your life is still happening.
To let yourself be supported before you reach breaking point.
When additional mental-health support may help
Please speak with your GP, fertility specialist or a qualified mental-health professional if anxiety, hopelessness or low mood is affecting your sleep, relationships, work or ability to function.
Psychological support is not an admission that you are coping badly. It is one form of appropriate fertility care.
Research indicates that structured mind-body and group psychological interventions may improve emotional wellbeing and quality of life among women experiencing infertility, although the effects on pregnancy outcomes remain less certain.
If you feel unsafe or are having thoughts of harming yourself, seek urgent professional support immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal to feel frightened that my fertility journey will never end?
Yes. Fertility treatment often involves repeated uncertainty, waiting and difficult decisions. Fear, grief and emotional exhaustion are understandable responses and deserve compassionate support.
Does stress cause infertility or IVF failure?
Stress should not be blamed as the cause of infertility. Research has not consistently shown that stress reduces IVF success. Supporting emotional wellbeing is still important because prolonged distress can affect sleep, relationships and quality of life.
Can acupuncture help with fertility-treatment anxiety?
Some people find acupuncture appointments relaxing and supportive during fertility treatment. It cannot guarantee conception or live birth, and should be used as complementary care alongside appropriate medical treatment.
What services does Spring offer for fertility support?
Spring lists acupuncture, naturopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, womb massage, pregnancy massage, Reiki, tarot and Cellular Resonance Therapy. The most appropriate options depend on your health, treatment stage and practitioner assessment.
When should I seek psychological support during fertility treatment?
Consider speaking with your GP or a qualified psychologist if distress is persistent, affects daily functioning or relationships, or makes it difficult to cope with appointments and decisions. Seek urgent help if you feel unsafe or have thoughts of self-harm.
Where is Spring Acupuncture Clinic located?
